Panel: Primary Care Informatics - An Emerging Discipline

This discussion presented by the Primary Care Informatics Working Group (PCI-WGWG) will describe the recent developments in the field of primary care informatics. The session will review the field of primary care informatics, the contents of the scientific literature, the educational opportunities for aspiring informaticians, and the role of the primary care physician in developing new applications and interfacing with the business community. Dr. Alan Zuckerman will begin the panel with a presentation entitled, “What is Primary Care Informatics?”. He will identify unique aspects of primary care practice, and discuss their implications for informaticians and practicing clinicians. Dr. William Hersh will review the educational needs of primary care informaticians, the existing training opportunities, and the career paths available to fellowship graduates and other individuals with an informatics background. Dr. Frank Sullivan will describe the “state of the science” in primary care informatics, based upon his review of the informatics literature recently published in the British Medical Journal. Dr. Jacob Reider will present his observations on “What I learned in my 15 minutes of the dot-com frenzy”, a discussion of the role of the primary care clinician in the development of new applications in primary care informatics.
