General information

  1. The new AMIA PCIWG Web site went live on 01 February 2005. The URL is <http://pciwg.amia.org/>.
  2. The bottom of each page contains the URL of the current page and a link back to the home pages. The images at the top of the pages also link to the home pages.

Types of pages

  1. The site contains two main types of pages: I am calling these standard and live-edit pages.
  2. Standard pages are conventional Web pages.
  3. Live-edit pages
    1. Live-edit pages can be edited directly online, without any additional software.
    2. You can identify a live-edit page by the link “Edit Page” in the upper right-hand corner of the page. A duplicate “Edit Page” link can also be found at the bottom of the page.
    3. If you need to edit a page, ask Mike for the password. Most live-edit pages have the same password, so this is an “honor system”. This is meant to foster collaboration and is not meant to be restrictive.
    4. All changes are expected to be accurate and made honestly. Spam and advertisements will not be tolerated.
    5. The administrator of the Web site will review changes and may format or edit for readability.
    6. Notification of all changes will be sent to the administrator of the Web site. The system handles this automatically.
    7. These pages use a WikiWikiWeb system developed by Patrick R. Michaud. It is called PmWiki.
    8. PmWiki uses simple notations to mark up text. Markups are not required, and plain text may always be entered. The system will concatenate adjacent lines by default, so paragraphs should be delineated by ending them with a blank line.
    9. New pages can be created by inserting a WikiWord into the text. A WikiWord is simply a sequence of capitalized words joined together. WikiWords automatically become links to pages of the same name.
    10. Groups of pages can also be created. These exist up to one layer deep, not in a hierarchical structure. The top of each live-edit page displays the group name and the page name.
    11. MichaelWeiner is quite familiar with PmWiki notations and can answer your questions about formatting. The system is extremely flexible in terms of what it can do with text.
    12. Tables can be created but not especially easily.
    13. Images can be inserted at default, “in-line” locations.
    14. It is possible to upload files and reference them on the pages.
    15. You may notice that several individuals have “profiles” pages about themselves. Any PCIWG member in good standing may have a profile page. If you do not have a profile page and want one, you can have one created; contact MichaelWeiner.
